Lobelia wollastonii is among the tallest giant lobelias of the Rwenzori Mountains, reaching heights up to 7 m. It ranges the grassy, high-elevation bogs of the alpine zone, between 3,700 and 4,300 m. Atop a hollow woody stem is a rounded rosette of blue-green oversized leaves. The plant develops a shaggy flower spike of up to two meters above the rosette, bearded with long pale hairs.
