In Ancient Greek, the name rhododendron translates to “rose tree” (rhodon “rose” and dendron “tree”). The romantic name is understandable to those who glimpse the bright clusters of flowers in the wild, which can turn a natural landscape into something sublime. Rhododendron fallacinum is found in Borneo on the slopes of Mt. Kinabalu, its orange flowers glowing in the forest. It primarily grows between 1200 and 2500 meters, on open ridges or epiphytically on trees. Reaching five meters in height, the shrub has coppery colored leaves in whorls of four to six with a tough and papery texture. Its blooms are dense dome-shaped groups of fifteen to thirty-five flowers. In cultivation, this rhododendron requires a careful eye as it grows, because it can be challenging to “settle.” But for the determined gardener, the rare and spectacular result is a worthwhile reward.
