The apparent medicinal qualities of this West African tree have led to hundreds of scientific studies, which have found that it possess a relative abundance of biologically important compounds. It can reach up to 22 meters in height and two meters in girth. Its flowers are pinkish cream, turning to orange, and the four-winged fruit is very persistent and pungent. It is a cherished spice in Nigerian dishes (especially Banga soup).
