Native to East and Central Africa, Kosteletzkya begoniifolia is a perennial herb or small shrub that grows in montane forests, swamps, and marshes, at elevations around 1450 to 2350 m (4750 to 7700 ft). Its genus was originally classified as Hibiscus based on their similar flowers, but it was ultimately transferred to Kosteletzkya, named after a Bohemian botanist. The plant reaches 0.4 to 2.8 m (1 to 9 ft) in height and grows upright or somewhat scrambling, with toothed foliage. Large flowers range from deep to pale pink and are followed by yellowish brown fruit up to 12 mm (0.5 in) wide, containing kidney-shaped seeds.
