Vachellia gerrardii, also known as the red thorn or grey-haired acacia as it was formerly in the Acacia genus, is an exceptionally drought-resistant tree grown widely in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its ability to thrive in arid landscapes makes it a potentially useful ornamental in desert areas, with a prolific flowering of cream-colored, spherical blooms that attract pollinators. The tree can grow up to 14 m (46 ft), though more commonly reaches 9 m (30 ft). Its high-branching, flat crown of bipinnate leaves provides dappled shade, which allows grasses and plants to grow underneath it. For this reason it is frequently used on grazing land, and goats will readily consume its leaves. In its native range, the thorny branches are also used to make natural fences for livestock. The grey-haired acacia is fast-growing with sufficient water, though slower in dry conditions, and it can thrive in a variety of soil types as long as it receives full sun. Like many acacia trees, it can also be used as an attractive bonsai specimen.
