This giant groundsel towers over the icy altitudes of Mount Kenya by using frost-resistant mucilage and closing its densely packed cabbage-like rosette of leaves at night. Tall terminal spikes of upright flowers distinguish this species from D. keniodendron, whose flowers hang down. The soft-wooded trunk branches repeatedly and the limbs at ground level can root, leading to a horizontal (creeping) growth form.
