This spectacular species is a Giant Lobelia found only in the high mountains of East Africa, between 3800 and 4300 m (12500 to 14100 ft). The beauty of Lobelia deckenii is its incredible ability to adapt to both a vicious climate and the hyrax (a small furry ravenous herbivore). L. deckenii forms anywhere between one and eighteen rosettes, and each rosette produces a single columnar inflorescence with hundreds of flowers. With its specially designed rosettes, it holds reservoirs of water that freeze nightly for protection thus giving rise to its nickname, the “gin and tonic lobelia.”
